They are regarded as one of the best teams in world sport, with many Olympic medals.

And now a Parkes man will play a vital role in their continued dominance.

Ben Bishop has just been appointed Assistant Coach of the Australian Mens Hockey side, more commonly referred to as the Kookaburras.

The Kookaburras are the number one ranked men's hockey team in the world and current World Cup holders.

They are coached by a man regarded as one of the greatest coachesd in Australian sport, Ric Charlesworth.

And it was Charlesworth who sought out Bishop to join his coaching panel.

Bishop himself is an Australian representative who has turned his hand to coaching with outstanding success.

He has coached overseas, and is presently in charge of all hockey in the ACT.

He is ecstatic with his appointment and he and his wife, Karen (nee Lancaster, also from Parkes) and family will head off to Perth in the next few months.

Bishop will be undertaking the role of National Assistant Coach/Resources.

He will form part of the coaching staff for the National Mens Program while also taking a lead in performance analysis duties (analysis of the Australian team/players and other teams at international tournaments).

Bishop’s  first tour for 2013 will be to the Azlan Shah Cup (a tournament in which he played in and won as a player in 2008) in Malaysia in March.

‘I am thrilled to have this great opportunity to work with the National Program and one of the most renowned coaches in Australian sport in Ric Charlesworth,’ Bishop said.

Bishop’s appointment comes on top of remarkable achievements in the sport for other locals.

Jack Elliot and Mariah Williams have just won Gold Medals at the Australian Youth Olympics Festival) and former triple Olympian, Stephen Davies is about to tour South Africa with the National Womens Team as one of their assistant coaches.
